One of the least retro things I do is teach online. Specifically I teach college English online. I absolutely love it.
Before Pooh was born, I taught in person. I enjoyed it, but I’ve always been intrigued by online instruction. I took online classes while in college in the early 2000s and I really liked them. I also appreciate the fact that online eduction allows individuals who work full time/have families/work multiple jobs to still have access to furthering their education if the wish to. It has been an eduction game changer.
It does come with its challenges, though. It’s harder to reach students that don’t have to sit in your class everyday; they don’t have to respond to emails or phone calls if they don’t want to. I’m constantly on the look out for new technology that allows me to remain connected to my students and make them feel like I’m available when they need help. In January I plan to begin using a new app that allows my students and I to chat in realtime from our phone/tablets. I am also in the process of developing a website where I will post videos on various writing basics so students have access to informative tutorials 24/7.
It’s a lot of work, but I love it. And it allows me to stay home with Pooh. Technology isn’t retro but I’m RetroModern Mandee so this is the modern in Mandee.
